Umpire Responsibilities

Home Plate Umpire

 

Base Umpire

  • Ball/Strike
  • Fair/Foul (unless otherwise agreed upon)
  • Catch/No Catch (unless otherwise agreed upon)
  • Tag on batter/runner before the running lane
  • Touch of 3rd, except for batter/runner.
  • Tag up of Runner from 3rd
  • Runner from 1st to 3rd
  • One half of rundown, if practical
  • Interferance in the running lane
  • Help on swipe tag at 1st, only if asked
  • All balls out of play, unless base umpire "Goes out"
 
  • All plays on batter/runner at all bases
  • Fair/Foul, after the bag (if agreed upon)
  • Catch/No Catch (If going out on a "trouble" ball)
  • Tag on batter/runner in the running lane
  • Plays at 1st and 2nd base for all runners
  • Tag up of any runners from 1st or 2nd base
  • Plays on all runners, if plate umpire is "staying home" on a timing play
  • All rundowns, unless plate umpire takes one half
  • Pick-off at all bases
  • All steals of 2nd or 3rd base

Pre-game Conference (Between Umpires)

  • Introductions
  • Fair/Foul (Who's got what)
  • Catch/No Catch (Infield and Outfield)
  • Tag-ups and Touches (Batter and Runner)
  • 1st to 3rd coverage
  • Signals and Communication (how and when to ask for help)
  • Positioning
  • Putting the ball in play

Pre-game (Players)

  • Inspect equipment
  • Catcher's mask for anyone next to a coach with a bat!
  • No jewerly (Except medical alerts) - this includes colored rubber bands
  • On-deck batter get bat, WITH A HELMET ON!
  • Hustle in and out between innings

Pre-game with managers (Plate Meeting)

  • Insure all players are properly equiped
  • No leaving the dugout until "TIME" is acknowledged
  • Discuus how you want substitutes anouonced
  • Ground rules, if applicable

NOTE 1: Some umpires like to remind managers there is no arguing judgement calls (Ball/Strike, Safe/Out, Fair/Foul, etc.) Managers should already know this!

NOTE 2: Try never to issue a warning before the game. You will quickly lose authority and respect, if you do so and don't follow through.
